Senior Symphony

The award-winning Senior Symphony Orchestra is comprised of more than one hundred and twenty talented high school musicians from throughout the Bay Area. The orchestra studies under the baton of Dr. Jindong Cai, ECYS Music Director and master teacher who challenges the musicians to reach a high level of achievement.

In addition to featuring outstanding student soloists, professionals of international renown regularly perform with the ECYS Symphony.

In the 2017-2018 season, ECYS is thrilled to present award-winning Vietnamese-American composer Van Anh Vo, appearing as soloist in her original work: Lullaby for a Country at the Lunar New Year Celebration Concert. Joining the Symphony for the Annual Benefit Concert is acclaimed jazz pianist Taylor Eigsti for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Maestro Michael Morgan performing the role of Narrator in Copland's Lincoln Portrait. The Season Finale Concert will feature a collaboration with the Ragazzi Boys Chorus and Masterworks Chorale for Orff's epic Carmina Burana.

For a complete list of recent guest artists, visit the ECYS History page.

In January of 2012, the Senior Symphony debuted at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, performing to acclaim as part of the Bay of Hope Festival. ECYS was enthusiastically welcomed back to the Davies stage in 2014, 2016, and 2018 as a part of the Bay Area Youth Orchestra Festival.

The Symphony has a long tradition of international tours, in recent years touring every other summer. In Summer 2017, the Symphony dazzled audiences on Tour Central Europe, receiving standing ovations at concerts in Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest. Recent tours have included performances in England, Scotland, Austria, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Finland, Estonia, Russia, Poland, Slovakia, and Spain. For additional tour information, visit the tour page.

Each August the Symphony launches its season with a week-long retreat at UC Santa Cruz, where the season program is previewed and the instrumentalists work intensively with sectional coaches and the conductor.

The Symphony rehearses weekly throughout the school year, beginning in mid-August and concluding late in May or the first week of June. Prior to each concert program, there are sectionals with professional coaches and two dress rehearsals.

Symphony musicians are eligible to enroll in the ECYS Chamber Music and Performance Outreach Program.
