Requirements

On this page, audition requirements are listed separately for string players, winds/brass, and percussion for each ensemble. The conductors hearing each student at each level will be listening for:

  • overall music impression
  • clarity of intonation
  • preciseness of rhythm
  • scale & arpeggio preparation (arpeggios are strings only):
    – intonation
    – execution of slow to fast
    – tempos
    – preciseness of upper
    – position shifts (strings)

 

  • tone
  • demonstration of various bowings and wind articulations such as:
    – legato
    – detache
    – staccato
    – spiccato
    – marcato
  • sight reading
  •  

      


    String Players:

    Senior Symphony and Sinfonietta Orchestras (advanced)

    • Previous ensemble experience.
    • Prepared solo showing position work with fast and slow sections. No specific piece required.
    • Three-octave major scale, slurred, and related arpeggios of your choice, slow to fast tempos.
    • Sight-reading.

    Galbraith Honor Strings (intermediate-advanced)

    • Previous ensemble experience.
    • 3-4 or more years of lessons.
    • Prepared solo OR etude of contrasting styles and tempos.
    • Three-octave major scale, slurred (3 or 4 up to 12 notes per bow) with related arpeggios.
    • Sight-reading.

     Camerata Orchestra (intermediate)

    • Previous ensemble experience preferred.
    • 2-3 years of lessons.
    • Prepared solo OR etude.
    • Violin: two or three-octave A major scale with related arpeggio.
    • Viola/Cello: two or three-octave D major scale with related arpeggio.
    • Double Bass: two or three-octave scale of your choice with related arpeggio.
    • Sight-reading.

     Chamber Players Orchestra (entry-level) 

    • Minimum 1 year of lessons.
    • Prepared solo OR etude.
    • Violin: one or two-octave A major scale with related arpeggio.
    • Viola/Cello: one or two-octave D major scale with related arpeggio.
    • Double Bass: one or two-octave scale of your choice with related arpeggio.
    • Sight-reading.

     


     Woodwinds & Brass:

    Senior Symphony & Sinfonietta Orchestras (advanced)

    • Previous ensemble experience.
    • Chromatic scale for the complete range of your instrument.
    • All major scales MEMORIZED, minor scales are bonus points!
    • Prepared solo AND etude with contrasting styles & tempos.
    • Sight-reading.

     El Camino Wind Orchestra (intermediate-advanced)

    • Previous ensemble experience.
    • 3-4 or more years of lessons.
    • Prepared solo OR etude of contrasting styles and tempos.
    • All major scales MEMORIZED, minor scales are bonus points!
    • Chromatic scale for the complete range of your instrument MEMORIZED.
    • Sight-reading.

    Camerata Orchestra (intermediate)

    • Previous ensemble experience preferred.
    • 2-3 years of lessons.
    • Prepared solo OR etude.
    • Prepared major scale through four sharps and four flats MEMORIZED.
    • Chromatic scale for the complete range of your instrument MEMORIZED.
    • Sight-reading.

    Chamber Players Orchestra (entry-level)

    • Minimum of 1 year of lessons.
    • Prepared solo OR etude.
    • One octave major scale.
    • Sight-reading.

     


    Percussionists:

    Senior Symphony/Percussion Ensemble (advanced)

    • Solo OR etude on two of the following: tympani, snare drum, xylophone
    • Sight-reading on any of the above instruments

    Preparatory Orchestras (beginning-intermediate)

    May audition on one or more of the following:

    • Tympani or snare drum
    • Mallet skills (bells & xylophone)
    • Prepared solo or etude on any of the above instruments
    • Sight-reading on any of the above instrument
