Youth Orchestra Conductor
Orchestra Assistant & Music Librarian


Palo Alto-based youth orchestra seeks an energetic and passionate conductor for its two youngest ensembles. Rehearsals are on Mondays from 4:30 to 8:15 and include strings, woodwinds and brass.

Conduct 32 Monday rehearsals from September through May
Select and prepare three concert programs for December, March and May
Select audition requirements and repertoire
Audition new and continuing students in spring and fall
Participate as a judge in concerto competition
Participate in program improvement meetings
Work collaboratively with artistic and admin staff
Enforce policies, rules & guidelines

Higher education in music (strings or conducting preferred)
Knowledge of beginning orchestra repertoire
Experience working with K-5 children in a group setting
Positive, nurturing approach
Must value cultural and artistic diversity
Team player with other faculty and staff
Must pass criminal background check

This position is an independent contractor and reports to both Music Director and Executive Director.

Reporting to both the Executive Director and the Manager of Artistic Operations, the Orchestra Assistant supports faculty and student musicians at all ECYS rehearsals, progress checks, and concerts, is stage manager of all concerts, copies all music for the musicians and maintains the ECYS music library. This position works closely with the Manager of Artistic Operations and all faculty.

Duties include (but are not limited to):
Setup/breakdown for orchestras of various sizes and age groups
Maintain attendance records, track advance absence notifications
Setup/breakdown for dress rehearsal & concert with stage crew
Manage extensive music library
Copy orchestra parts, mark bowings as instructed by conductors, distribute to musicians
Prepare/copy conductor scores
Scan orchestra parts and distribute electronically as needed
Supervise young musicians, ensure their safety, enforce rehearsal etiquette and rules
Help transport large instruments (percussion) to concert venues by truck / large van
Coordinate seating & promotion auditions
Coordinate additional sectional rehearsals/progress checks
Manage parent volunteers, interact with parents and answer questions in a professional manner
Accompany group on 6-day annual retreat in Santa Cruz (early August)
Accompany group on tour to Europe (late June to early July 2019)
Attend all rehearsals and concerts and provide support as needed

Desired skills & qualifications:
Music degree or equivalent experience
Valid CA license, own vehicle and clean driving record
Highly organized and detail-oriented, punctual
Self-starter with precise time-management skills
Works well in a team environment
Sensitive to cultural diversity issues
Enjoys working with children and teens
Creative thinker and troubleshooter
Follows and provides detailed instructions
Must be able to lift 50 lbs., bend, stretch, sit or stand for extended periods of time

School year rehearsal schedule (not including setup/breakdown):
Sundays 3:30-6:30
Mondays 4:30-8:15
Tuesdays 6:00-8:45

Daytime office hours:
Approximately 25 hours weekly, flexible, some telecommuting possible

Dress rehearsal and concert schedule:
Varies, selected Saturdays or Sundays (about 12 concerts per year scheduled in advance) may start as early as 8:00 am or end as late as 10:00 pm
Progress checks: On occasion, W-Th-F 4:30-7:30

Compensation & benefits:
Starting salary range $33,000-$36,000 per year, full room & board on European tour and Santa Cruz retreat, FOUR weeks paid vacation per year (two weeks must be during the second half of December), enrollment in group health and dental policy, paid major national holidays, paid personal and sick days.

On some three-day weekends during the school year, Sunday rehearsals are moved to Mondays (such as MLK or Presidents' Day). Those days then become paid floating holidays to be taken on any non-rehearsal day.
