Sinfonietta Orchestra

The Sinfonietta Orchestra, conducted by John Eells, is an advanced level orchestra for middle and high school students. Sinfonietta students receive intensive training in preparation for membership in the ECYS Senior Symphony. The orchestra performs original music chiefly from the classical period repertoire.

The first half of each rehearsal is divided into sectionals. Mr. Eells conducts the full string section, Coach Debra Gardner works with the woodwinds, and Coach Richard Bice works with the brass. The second half of each rehearsal is devoted to full orchestra with Mr. Eells.

Several evenings each season are devoted to full sectionals, when professional coaches are invited to work intensively with a breakdown of all string sections in addition to the winds and brass.

The Sinfonietta Orchestra Season is launched in late August with a three-day local camp: Allegretto. The camp includes sectionals and full-orchestra.

Sinfonietta performs four times each season, recently making its debut at Flint Center alongside the Senior Symphony, in addition to performances at Spangenberg Theatre, Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center, De Anza Visual and Performing Arts Center, Carrington Hall, and Smithwick Theatre. Concerts feature special guest artists and student soloists.

Sinfonietta musicians are eligible to enroll in the ECYS Chamber Music and Performance Outreach Program.
